Reunion of Agrawals in Herman Park of
Houston
On April 7th, Saturday, approximately 200 Agrawals had a reunion
in the Herman Park of the Texas Medical Center of Houston. The
weather was great, the temperature was perfect, flowers were
blooming and the park was full of people all in cheerful mood. The
Annual Japanese Festival in the Park added more to the Mela
spirit. Agrawals in their usual way played Cricket lead by Shekhar
Agrawal, lemon on spoon race, three legged race, Kabbaddi and
other sports. This annual get-together, also called Sammelan
started with Snacks and Drinks, followed by chatting (net-working)
and sports for both young and adults. The highlight of the picnic
was a special guest of honor, Consul-General of India
Hon. Rinzing Wangdi. Another highlight was fundraising for
the Gujarat Earthquake relief fund. The Agrawal Association of
America offered a check of $14,000 to BAPS of Houston and another
check for the same amount to India Development Relief Fund.
At the picnic, we announced that the AAA Foundation is offering 15
scholarships of $500 each to high school students of Agrawal
heritage for the year 2001. The applicant must be a Texas resident
and a member of the association; a preference will be given to
juniors and seniors. The application can be downloaded from our
website and has to be submitted to the AAA Foundation by June 15,
2001. This important event was followed by an elaborate
lunch with fresh Naan being cooked on the spot. The lunch was
followed by Antyakashri, lead by Anjali Agrawal, in which girls
competed against boys and men competed against women. It was
played by the participants with full excitement. Finally at 4PM,
all headed back home as if returned from an Indian Mela. For
